Anahata Yoga

Anahata Yoga offers a unique, powerful and graceful style of hatha yoga asana, known as the Dance of Shiva and Shakti.

This form of yoga asana is a meditative flowing vinyasa asana practice, designed to open the energy channels in the body and invite the energy of Shakti, residing in the base of the body in Muladhara Chakra, to rise through Sushumna and merge with Shiva, residing in Sahasrara Chakra in the crown of the head. We aim to rediscover the realm of pure potential of the inner self and its spiritual essence.

People are an amazing network of cellular intelligence, energy, thought, emotions, electric currents, organ actions, hormones, nervous systems, tissues, blood and lymph flows. All these elements are interwoven, inter-reactive and capable of transformation through this yoga practice. We focus particularly on the internal aspects of yoga: organ cleansing, tissue pumps, nervous systems, circulation of lymph and blood, releasing psychic knots known as granthis from Sushumna Nadi and pranic blockages from the Nadis, and creating hydraulic and pneumatic pressures within the body to create change. All movements are undertaken with inner conscious awareness, promoting a state of integration of the mind and body.

Anahata chakra is the fourth primary chakra located at the heart centre. It represents love, compassion, charity and balance. By opening the heart chakra we are able to act in accordance with our higher selves, following our hearts, from a place of love, compassion, integrity and openness.

The Anahata chakra is the seat of divine love and it is here that emotion is re-channelled into devotion. Vishnu granthi, the second psychic knot along shushumna, representing the bondage of emotional attachment, is located here and when this knot is released one becomes free of all selfishness and egoistic emotional attachment and thereby attains mental and emotional peace and equilibrium.

Testimonial from 2016 Anahata Yoga teacher training:

‘Yay we are yoga teachers! Incredible. This will take a while to sink in and arrive in my mind, after 25 amazingly inspiring days, dedicated to Anahata yoga, yoga of the heart.
It is such a nice side effect to be officially approved to share the passion about wholesome yoga practice in daily life. Actually many of us participated in Peter Clifford’s training to grow and evolve, to process matters of the heart and to heal by loving oneself for who we are.

Yoga begins when we get off the mat, so tells us this incredibly youthful and wise being who loves to share his abundance of insightful life experience in stories – just like he was taught by his great Indian mentors a few decades ago. And our wonderful group that felt warmly attuned from the first moment – despite or maybe because of our great diversity of nationalities and characters – loves to listen to Peter’s stories. We equally loved to be challenged by his flowing Asana sequences and fascia stretches, were happy about the calming, balancing or energizing practice of Pranayama, were baffled by the visualizing and joyous effect of the five element form, we enjoyed rapping ancient mantras or studying Sanskrit in form of chanting and traveling through our chakras, into our mind and back into the physical body. Each day of the yoga teacher training was enriched by mind- forming yoga, backed up by contemporary scientific findings, approving ancient traditional yogic wisdom.

For most of the time I was experiencing what Santosha means, contentment. I felt the continuum of blissful moments and an active alive body. But surely I was getting emotional as well at times and of course I would indulge in the opposite of happy for a short while, trusting in the support of a loving group of peers and an eye- opening teacher, emphasizing what holds true in my heart, but may not have been seen for reasons of self doubt. In moments of sadness or suffering we can grow the most, maybe. In the end, there’s always a balance, right? What a great journey to get closer to who I really am, to what I feel and how I can shape the present moment more consciously. What a bliss to have participated in the course and what a shame that it has been completed today… I want more of these Santosha moments and therefore I can easily see myself integrating Anahata yoga into my daily life; because I can! Why would I not do that?

As Peter says, yoga is not about Instagram, nor about “look at me, look at what I can do”. More so let’s be curious about our evolution and enjoy what we have created with our wonderful Anahata yoga teacher training.

Thank you dearly for an unforgettable time: amazing Premananda Peter and his assistants Olympia with her loving care for all of us, chanting and om-ing Michael, busy but relaxed techi Yogi Severin, and Anahata-Thai- Chi- Marc who gets a warrior pahhh- breath for comparison. Thank you to all fellow students, to the group of wonderful human beings, together we made each moment rich and fulfilling.

This is an atmospheric testimonial, written in the gap between two chapters of my life. Greetings and Anahata love from the plane.’ – Hari Om Tatsa

The Dance of Shiva and Shakti

The Dance of Shiva and Shakti is a form of hatha yoga. The phrase ‘hatha yoga’ is a combination of three words: ‘ha’ meaning the sun, ‘tha’ meaning the moon, and yoga meaning yoke or union. Thus, the practice of hatha yoga refers to the union of the sun and moon. The sun is the symbol of Shiva who represents conscious awareness and resides in Sahasrara Chakra in the crown of the head. The moon is the symbol of Shakti who represents divine or Kundalini energy and resides in Muladhara Chakra. Kundalini is depicted as a snake coiled three times at the base of the spine. Hatha Yoga can be said to mean the joining together of Shiva, conscious energy, and Shakti, divine energy.

Our intention is to encourage Shakti, the moon, to rise up to the embrace of Shiva, the sun. The metaphor of a lovers’ dance invokes the idea of a creative interplay between conscious awareness and divine energy and reminds us to take a joyous, graceful, playful approach to achieving the state of union that is the ultimate goal of yoga.

Five Element Form

The Five Element Form is part of an ancient Tantric Yoga practice known as Tattwa Shuddhi Sadhana element purification practice. This practice was shared with Peter Clifford at the Kamakhya Tantric Temple in Assam in Northern India by his teacher Swami Shankara. Peter is the only known yogi still teaching who was entrusted by his teacher to impart the knowledge to teach the Five Element Form to his own students. The Form is a sequence of flowing movements resembling traditional vinyasa yoga asana and although similar to Tai Chi and Chi Kung, it is a traditional ancient Indian practice. It connects us to the five elements of earth, water, fire, air, and akasha. The Form uses breath, creative visualisation and healing colors and sounds in a powerful, transformative physical and spiritual practice that unites the five sheaths (Pancha Koshas). Connecting with the five elements personally reminds us of our relationship to the planet Earth and the entire universe and allows us to draw on the strength of all the elements of the universe in our daily lives.
